Simple Question, Is Abortion Morally Wrong?

Dear Delight in Truth readers, please glance at the above chart and be shocked.

Be amazed that professing Christians can hold neutral and perhaps even favorable views with respect to the abomination of abortion.

The Pew Research Center did telephone interviews in March/April 2013 with a random sample of 4,006 US adults and asked them various questions about controversial matters.  On abortion, 49% of Americans believe it is morally wrong with a few percentage points higher among women than men.

The statistics get interesting when broken down by race and religion (denomination of Christianity).

As expected, evangelicals (Baptists, Pentecostals, Charismatics, some Reformed, nondenominationals) view abortion as morally wrong in high numbers.  But 25% of them still view it as morally neutral or right despite the fact that evangelical churches overwhelmingly preach the pro-life position.

The most disappointing statistic is among white mainline Protestants (some Lutherans, United Methodist Church, Quakers, Presbyterian USA, United Church of Christ, Episcopalians).  Some of these churches also accept pastors who actively practice the homosexual lifestyle.

The disregard for life has become an abhorrent disease in some of these apostate churches.

How are we better than those in China where a camera captured a 2-year-old girl getting run over by two trucks and 18 people skirted around her while she lay bleeding and flailing?  One may say that this a stretch of a comparison, but I can attest that the unborn baby opens her mouth and SCREAMS in pain as limbs are torn off during abortion, and abortion is no accident like the trucks running over the Chinese girl.

The apathy towards life is becoming more prominent as we are approaching the end of the age.  We are reminded by Paul in 1 Timothy 4:1 that teaching, doctrines, positions and propaganda that are against God (and His Spirit Who is the Spirit of Life – Romans 8)  will become increasingly common:

“But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons”

To have people who think of themselves as children of God while holding anti-life positions is nothing short of demonic.

May God awaken his true children to realize the precious gift of life.

  1. the stats are unbelievable and they attest to the truth of Matthew 7:13-14 “For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”

      • the world’s standards have changed drastically. We are no longer judged by what we say only, but we have arrived at the next step: being judged for what we believe. We can only hold fast to the Gospel, no matter what!

  3. I think for the first time ever in my life I am beginning to see just how narrow the road is. Let’s keep praying that other believers will awaken to this often difficult to swallow truth..there are no “gray areas” with God. Yet we can rejoice that he is a perfect and just God. Be glad there are no grey areas…imagine if we had to constantly guess about what God thought was right or wrong! We don’t..he has laid it out clearly in his Word and leaads us to understanding through his Holy Spirit.

Let us also pray for those yet to be brought into the Kingdom before Christ returns, that we might be a light to them. If we look like the world, how will they see Christ’s love in us? It is easy to love with the world’s love. Many unbelievers I know are loving people. But we have to love with Christ’s love through the power of the Holy Spirit.

@ DIT – Thank you, and may the Lord continue to bless you for preaching the message of true repentance from sin, along with the wonderful good news that our Saviour loves to forgive a repentant heart. Both are important, particularly in the context of abortion. Your obvious love for the Lord, his people and those still suffering in the darkness of unbelief is of great encouragement to me.

My son (9) asked me last night…can God really forgive a murderer, even someone who has murdered a lot of people? My reply was a hearty YES!!! But that only a truly repentant heart, convicted by the Holy Spirit of the offense of our sin, will receive God’s promised forgiveness. This is happening for my son at the moment, and it is a hard but wonderful process to shepherd.

    • What a blessing to see the work of the Holy Spirit in your son’s life. Be there for him, as God is using you, and us, parents to evangelize our kids.

None of our kids are born ‘born-again’

Sooner or later, when they are kids or teenagers or adults, they must experience the new birth in order to be saved.

I pray for my children all the time for this.

  4. Very sad. These are my thoughts and I work around this issue daily.

You are so right when you state: “… that the unborn baby opens her mouth and SCREAMS in pain.”

Here is a link to a short film, made years ago, that the pro-lifers feel is too gruesome to share anymore. All I know is that it saved one life because a relative of mine was brave enough to ask his sister to watch it.

I grew up in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. It is still holding a strong pro-life position as far as I am aware. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (a bit larger I think) is very pro-death. The inclusion of United Methodists doesn’t surprise me either. It appears that in the next few years they will approve of gay marriage. The vote was very close in their last convention if I remember correctly.

I also think that we are approaching the end of the age. I can’t wait to see the millions of those who were killed in the womb IN GLORY!

    Come quickly Lord Jesus.

    Thanks for the info, Delight.

    • Thanks for the video, Chris.

I think there are plenty of faithful Lutherans who have not compromised the faith like the ELCA have done. In fact ELCA has split a few years ago on the issue of homosexuality, and that shows that there are leaders there unwilling to compromise.

Just a thought, Chris: we have an excellent chance of experiencing the return of the Lord in our lifetime, the way things are progressing.

  5. Delight, some eye opening statistics. Your quote is spot on. The malignant
work of demons is manifesting in believers as seen by the facts. One has to wonder about people who are hardened in their hearts and how did they get to that place. Their does not seem to be much difference between unsaved people (little girl in china) and supposed believers.

I agree with Rodi’s quote of Matt. 7:13,14.
