Avoid False Teachers and Prophets

This is an amazing image, one which we will try to spiritualize in this post.

This shoal of fish acts as one unit.  They are highly sensitive to each other’s movements and this capability allows them to move in the same direction at the same time.  When a predator attacks, they sense the intruder, and their tactile sensors allows the shoal to avoid immediate contact with it.

The body of Christ should act in a similar way.  We need to be highly in tune with each other and with sound doctrine in order to sense false teachers and prophets who bring in heretical teaching or sin.

We need to identify and isolate such intruders and avoid mingling in their teachings in the same way the shoal attempts to avoid the sharks.

Essentially every New Testament writer gives us warnings with respect to this issue.

2 Peter 2:1-2 “But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed.”

Romans 16:17-18 “I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.”

Matthew 7:15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.”

Any teaching or prophecy that is against Scripture must be rejected, and the false teacher or prophet must be avoided.

  1. This is a particularly important topic in our day, Delight. I like the analogy of the shoal of fish acting as one unit. It reminds me of the movie, Hoosiers, where the team becomes like this group of fish.

Sadly, we are not very much like this picture. I do believe, however, that the true body of Christ acts just like the fish. We know there are sharks among us and we pray for one another that true doctrine will be preached.

God blesses those (not in a worldly way) who follow Him.

    Great post.

  2. A very good post. I would add that in the picture the sharks are separated from the fish, this is a loud and clear truth from the Holy Spirit. We in Him are protected by His active presence within.

I beg your indulgence in sharing a truth. In an assembly years ago i sat in the rear of the assembly, i saw a bright glow around three little boys who were with their dad. when i looked to him, he was encased in a clear like tube similar to a tube used to keep cigars fresh.

He was standing and flailing his arms up and down trying to escape. I asked our Lord, His reply, ” I am protecting the assembly from him and his sin.” My point in sharing is that we often do not see our Lord in our midst individually as well as corporately. But He is there! Just like the picture above.

  4. Acceptance and listening to others beliefs and just trying to understand.the fish do try not to get eaten by the sharks but they accept this and understand the necessity as humans we need do do the same we cannot compare the fish to us we should compare ourselves to the fish yes we should stick together but there are angry people not satanists and we should try to say something to comfort them because they are scared before they are angry And Christians have been led to fear and avoid the people that are angry and view them as sharks no pretty much the shark does want to eat the fish but the angry people do not want to eat or even harm the Christians now this day in age Christianity has alot of people scared And converted or scared and angry Christianity is not to far off we just need to view our selfs as temporarily separated from god instead of being created by him as separate beings to serve him we ourselves created this life while connected with god to learn and progress and beautify not to serve. now I am not a shark I am extremely content and have no fear in something that I have faith in and it makes sense similar to Christianity but a little bit more accepting and less condeming
